Americans didn't speak up because anytime you legitimacy criticized Obama you were met with "that sounded like thinly veiled racism" remarks. Nobody wants to be called a racist. Especially people who aren't. We were too polite for too long. Getting falsely labeled stings a bit the first time, because it is an injustice of sorts. But get a thick skin pretty quick.
