At least with Facebook, you can stay in touch with family. It's useful that way. I've deleted everyone except close family. And even then, some of them take me to task for my political views.

FB is just another way for these bad actors to keep track on you. You may think, "So what?" but just wait. The day will come when they want us all to obey and FB will be their tattletale. It is creepy.

With an active account they get more info but Im not sure why you are downvoted. It is important to know that even if you never made an account they likely have your email address on file, your picture your contacts and all sorts of information that may be extrapolated such as age, location, highschool, college, work history and so on. How? All from your friends being on facebook and giving that information to them by including your name in photos and just having you in their email and contact list on their phones.

Laws can be put in place to stop this in the short run but in the long run there is nothing that can stop this type of tech. Musk is just going after publicity because he knows that this would be useless as another service would pop up doing the same thing. You can only fight tech with other tech. A fully decentralized form of communication where it is exponentially harder for a centralized place or single person to collect all this data on you will come about. Obfuscation techniques where that doesnt work may come about such as publishing AI generated photos of you in many different locations at all times so no one could find out where you are at any given time. Bitcoin already is amazing privacy and decentralized tech for payments and hopefully 3d printers and more open source tech will allow people complete autonomy over their machines again. There is a way to fight back and I think awareness is important. We are still at the spreading consumer awareness stage. Making people know the value of retaining their privacy.

The first profile was that of a turtle. Complete with a history. But I have had to turn the page into a sales site due to my entire mode of making a living has been shut down due to the plague. In fact even bought FB ads today to see what works and doesn't work. It's all old folks anyway...and surprisingly that is my customer demographic...

1
JohnWickParabellum 1 point ago +1 / -0

Exactly. I've never had any of those social media site and Biden still emails me using my full name asking for money.

That drivers license picture update every few years AND the internet bill at my address is all they need to leash me without my permission.

We are in no way free people, simply people owned by an invisible master.

I've never feared God, for I live a good patriotic American life... my fear is of men working to make people like me the enemy... in the three letter agencies.

7 years ago I ended my 3 month relationship with Facebook when as a former military intel guy I realized it was the largest link analysis tool in the world and all the info was supplied by the targets. Wanna keep in touch use a fucking phone. As a cop I used a fake Facebook account and made cases all day long. Sorry, but not for me.

Not saying thats not a worthy pursuit, but isnt that how we get sucked into anything bad for us? The ol carrot dangle to keep us hanging around...”If you leave us, you wont be able to stay in touch with your family...” The truth is everyone you TRULY care about or that TRULY cares about you has your phone number, email and/or address and has every opportunity to contact you and same for you to contact them. As someone who left facebook and worried that i might miss out on friends or family goings on let me just put it simply: The first week or two will be strange and after that you wont miss it one bit. If that sounds like im talking about quitting a drug, its because essentially it is.

22
Meme_Too 22 points ago +22 / -0

The whole concept of Facebook is flawed. It's as meaningful as those newsletters people include with their Christmas cards. You post something for your 300 closest friends and that's supposed to qualify as caring? You might as well place a "To whom it may concern" notice in the classified section of the newspaper. Give me a break.

14
doug2 14 points ago +14 / -0

Sorry but if you've ever actually had to quit a drug you wouldn't say such a stupid thing. I've done both. Facebook quitting was maybe .01% as tough as kicking heroin and didn't resemble it at all.

14
senilemuffler 14 points ago +14 / -0

I'm happy that you were able to quit. I've lost a couple to H, but not you, pede - good job.

3
TwoPlusTwoEqualsFour 3 points ago +3 / -0

That's a fair point, but I don't thing anyone was trying to downplay the effort required to kick any addiction regardless of difficulty. Glad to hear it tho.

1
SecondProtectsFirst 1 point ago +1 / -0

It's probably a little closer to quitting weed or caffeine. No physical withdrawals, but you have to rewire your mind a bit because it's used to getting regular effortless dopamine hits.

1
GodzillaTrump 1 point ago +1 / -0

I think it goes without saying its as easy to quit as hard drugs but it does have some reward based systems in place that release some of the same chemicals in the brain that drugs can release (albeit in lesser amounts) and that can contribute at least in part to us continuing to seek out the feeling it gives

1
doug2 1 point ago +1 / -0

Fair enough. I think I got a little triggered there and came in hot. I can understand what you're saying and I'm sure some of the same brain circuitry is hijacked, just like gambling addiction. Thanks for the civility and further explanation.

1
GodzillaTrump 1 point ago +1 / -0

Dude no doubt! And to clarify i re-read my previous comment and i meant to say “its MORE easy to quit than hard drugs”...so yeah i get you! Just trying to expose the very intentional ways that social media tries to use psychological methods to get your brain keeping you coming back

1
doug2 1 point ago +1 / -0

That's a great point I hadn't thought of. They absolutely do this on purpose, I mean the whole idea of getting "likes" and having people repost your commenta is to instill a feeling of validation and pride, give you a little hit of dopamine. I mean what else would convince women to publicly post photos of them half naked or naked, for free, publically on the internet? It just shows that for some people the feeling of getting a bunch of likes on a picture is worth essentially prostituting themselves for. That is real power. I also think kicking hard drugs gives one a certain perspective, like "man this will be nothing compared to what I've done before," and that can actually make it much easier in a real sense than it would be for someone who has never experienced any kind of "quitting something " before. So the experience could be a lot harder for other people than it was for me.

I hate this excuse. You have a fucking phone, a piece of paper, a pen and a stamp. You don’t need Facebook to “keep up with family”. Call them like a human being

14
Rugar22 14 points ago +14 / -0

Or actually try to meet in person lol.

5
GenderlessWookie 5 points ago +5 / -0

I live far from family. They all have Facebook, I don't. They aren't allowed to post my photo on Facebook when we have have gatherings. Magically I'm still able to keep in touch with them and have a good relationship.

It's crazy...

13
BobSacamano 13 points ago +13 / -0

If you have their phone numbers, call or text them instead. Much more meaningful

If he actually bought and deleted Twitter I will buy a Tesla this year. I am not shitting you. I am planning on a new car anyway.

5
SecondProtectsFirst 5 points ago +5 / -0

Just do it. I have a 3 and I'm taking delivery of a Y on Monday. No regrets. They are objectively better than any other car. American made, run on American coal, and can easily smoke pretty much every douchebag in a BMW. 90% of the time you can drive with only one pedal because of the regenerative braking. Charging is only something you have to think about on one-way trips over 300 miles or so. For the majority of your driving you just get home (or to some destination), plug it in, and leave with a full battery the next morning.

3
turribleNightWork 3 points ago +3 / -0

Do yourself a favor and avoid the headache of buying a Tesla. Absolutely terrible quality control not worth the risk.

2
SecondProtectsFirst 2 points ago +2 / -0

The quality control issues are real but fairly overblown. The vast majority of people don't have any issues but the ones who do complain the loudest. Tesla will fix them for you if you want, or you can just refuse delivery and they'll give you a different one.

1
1
SecondProtectsFirst 1 point ago +1 / -0

I own a Tesla, and I’m about to own two. I’m pretty active in the Tesla owners community. I honestly think I’d be more credible than CNN on this topic. Sure, people have problems, but the warranty on these cars goes for much longer than any other manufacturer. 120,000 mile power train warranty. Every single Tesla owner I’ve ever met says they will never drive any other car brand again, even if they have had issues.

Besides...

Even with the poor ranking, J.D. Power notes that it's not an official ranking because the company doesn't meet all the criteria to be measured.

The unintended acceleration thing is from idiots who hit the gas instead of the brake and that makes you go RIGHT away in an EV. There’s an “obstacle aware acceleration” setting and everything but they just don’t turn it on. Keep in mind that brain dead liberals and people like Raz Simone drive these things too.

Meanwhile leftists are shrieking that Facebook isn't censoring conservatives and the president enough. Facebook certainly has it's issues, but Twitter and Reddit are definitely worse.

8

The CIA will never let Facebook go down.

7
deleted 7 points ago +7 / -0
6
axrevolutionai 6 points ago +6 / -0

Twitter is worse because of the censorship

but you can use twitter as anonymous with no friends and it's fine

Facebook NEEDS data to work for you. Try running a Facebook with no friends and see what happens. Any hint of info it has, it will use to try to find friends. Proximity data, mobile IPs, wifi login data, GPS data. Even if you gave it a fake name and history, watch it pull at least one or two people you actually know.

Personally, I'm glad no one in my family uses Facebook, and the ones that do definitely don't want me on it.

Considering FB market cap is 600+ b and was in the hundreds of billions 2 years ago too, Elon wouldn’t have been able to buy even a fraction of the company. Even if he had the money for the market cap, they wouldn’t sell unless there was an offer of 1 trillion or more. Lmao. There is no entity outside of the US government (aka us) that can afford to buy Facebook.

tbh, I don't want FB deleted. Not because they are trying to push people to the left, but its the only way I can keep in contact with a lot of my friends back from my high school days. ANd I don't want to lose that.
