After looking up the crime stats, I think this is the correct answer. I used to live in the general area, and have been in Downtown Detroit numerous times. The lower population density and being very aware of my surroundings at all times is probably why I was never a victim.
I used to live near Detroit, but not in Detroit. You were generally safe in a lot of areas, but would want to watch your back if going downtown or areas around that.
I just looked it up, and it looks like you're correct, Detroit crime is much worse than Chicago by most measures.

Having driven through Detroit multiple times in the last few years, I find that hard to believe...
