Assuming there is no vaccine, yes, we will all get it. But deaths will be much higher if we all get it at the same time, since that would strain medical resources for those who need them.
Also, by dragging this out it buys some time to find better treatment options, and/or protocols as you mentioned.
That's what the lockdown was supposed to be for. It's been four months since this virus appeared. We have had all the time we needed to assemble data and resources to treat this thing.
At some point you have to realize that your army has enough ammunition and weaponry and just start fighting the war. We can't be in a perpetual state of "lockdown" just waiting until we have the absolute perfect idea of how to treat WuFlu and all of its impacts. Eventually we have to fucking face it head on and admit the fact that young, healthy people don't deserve to be kept in isolation and have their economic livelihoods and social lives ruined for something that doesn't even negatively impact 99% of the population.
