Trump should join Parler and simply link every post there in his tweets on Twitter. Force people to visit Parler to read the post.

kogar [S] 107 points ago +110 / -3

I second this. However, it's not really a good idea. Politicians have to reach their audience where they sit - forcing them to change won't work (Parler, like Facebook, requires a login). On the other hand, "gravity" motivates people to change. In the last 24 hours, there has been a TON of conservative twitter personalities moving from Twitter to Parler. It's a pretty impressive shift.

85
Warskullx 85 points ago +85 / -0

Trump has a ton of gravity.

His people will follow him, because they like him. The press will follow him because it is their job. The haters will follow him because they love screaming at him.

Trump has the power to instantly legitimize and empower any twitter competitor.

33
Former_RM2 33 points ago +34 / -1

As a successful and savvy businessman, I'm sure Trump knows this. He could crush Twitter in one fell swoop by declaring he's moving to Parlor and then never posting another Twitter post. Why doesn't he do it?

60
progressives4Trump 60 points ago +60 / -0

He has his reasons. Probably to force them to keep censoring him so he can crush them in a different way.

25
superfly 25 points ago +25 / -0

Exactly

17
FreeBased1 17 points ago +17 / -0

Maybe what GEOTUS could do is to create a Parler account and post the same content on twitter and Parler, for a few weeks.

Then, for the next few weeks, post half and half. That forces the media to follow him on Parler, because they'll want that content to make up their stories.

He will start getting followers on Parler.

Then just post more and more on Parler, and less and less on twitter. His spiciest and most "controversial" stuff can be on Parler, because that forces MSM and looney lefties to read it, on Parler.

7
superfly 7 points ago +7 / -0

Parler is a closed platform. They've given users the ability to share a link to their own original post, but not the threads, and not re-posts form other users as far as I know. Posting something on Twitter makes it 100% public, it comes up in search engine results (even if years old), and the tweet (or retweet) with the entire accompanying thread can be linked anywhere for anyone to click on and see.

2
WhoMurderedSethRich 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah so how do you get people to see your Parler profile and join you if you can't share it publicly? I've been using it for a few days but I think it's dumb that I can't share a link to my profile (even just a limited view that says "join this person to see their posts").

1
Dreyfus 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yes, there are direct links to profiles. This is me: https://parler.com/profile/Dreyfus

1
WhoMurderedSethRich 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yeah but you can only view profiles if you are logged in as a user. Which I think is dumb.

4
Mean_MAGA_Facka 4 points ago +4 / -0

The hug of death. Parlor would grind to a halt or their AWS bill would be off the charts.

9
KAG_Master 9 points ago +9 / -0

Really all Trump has to do is say "I am imploring and asking that all Conservatives move and start an account with X. So that we aren't silenced." And it will happen. Heck .win if they wanted too (though I think they should wait till we are Top 100) could become a new reddit. Back in the early 2000s Digg sided with Corporations (the baddies at the time) over organic free speech and so everyone moved to reddit. Now the baddies are the leftist who have been co-opted by big corporations and Chyna, and they have silenced organic free speech on reddit. So everyone (smart and clever) moved here.

Yep, I watched Tim Pool talk about this...exactly right. I dont use Twatter but would join Parler if Trump did.

7
Thedaythe_redditdied 7 points ago +7 / -0

That’s ok. I’m fine with him posting on Parler and then an hour later posting to Twitter. Then people who want the news ASAP go to Parler and then people who don’t pay attention still get to see it. It will drive lots of people to Parler and still get the slackers

5
FergieJR 5 points ago +5 / -0

I agree but he should start and account and have himself or his team make 1-2 posts there that are not issued out on Twitter

Can still use both programs and see how that effects things.

If he shows up there and makes even one post a day that is only shared there. It would make a lot of media types make accounts to keep an eye on it plus other effects.

4
ODOnRedPill 4 points ago +4 / -0

This kind of thing was said a week ago about Parler never working. Look at it now. It requires ACTION. This would work. Hell, half of the "journalists" in this country would have to do it because that's a majority of their activism...errr journalism.

It's only a matter of time and it will deal a heavy blow to Twitter. Obviously won't kill it, but it will knock them down hard.

1
nachosamplerREBORN 1 point ago +1 / -0

He can do both - when Twitter censors, users can go to Parlor. When they eventually ban him, he’s already there. win/win

Good. I do not want Parker to be a fucking right wing echo chamber. I want the fucking leftists there to mock, ridicule, and destroy.

I have WAY more interest in interacting with them than I do typing out a “yeah man totally agree” reply 90% of the time in a conservative bubble.

So what if their posts are toxic? Deal with it and destroy them.

3
ChippingToe 3 points ago +3 / -0

Exactly this. We have to get them used to honest human interaction again, as opposed to the toothless, sterile chatter hosted by Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Youtube et al.

2
Wearyman 2 points ago +2 / -0

Well we have to have someone to kick, don't we? I'm fine with Lefties being there. I'm NOT fine with conservatives being silenced every time we beat a lefty badly in the battle of ideas. So as long as we can continue the ideological beat downs without being censored, they are welcome.

That's When it'll replace twitter.

(also does it handle video? Twitter is all about images and video as much as 144 characters.)

59
kogar [S] 59 points ago +59 / -0

Don Jr went there, along with Bongino, Michael Flynn, Devin Nunes, Rand Paul, etc. Seriously, the list is impressive. I'd say it's a matter of short time before DJT throws his hat in the ring. Parler seems to be increasing features as it goes along. Works well right now.

30
AtariArtist 30 points ago +30 / -0

Ooo. Don Jr is quite the catch.

Can Parlers be retweeted? Because that's how memes from (CRAP - it's late I just spaced his name) could retain visibility being retweeted by the POTUS.

0
KAG_Master 0 points ago +1 / -1

Parlor needs to do something that will separate it from Twitter. Like how Facebook was the more secure Myspace. I think Twitters biggest flaw is its divisiveness (maybe let people choose whether they want to only here from the Left or Right) or maybe its character limit.

0
jsnforce 0 points ago +1 / -1

I feel like the biggest difference between MySpace and Facebook was the way information was presented. MySpace was a mini-website presentation of yourself: Kinda an outward projection of data, whereas Facebook is an aggregator that feeds you data.

5
Danmax67 5 points ago +5 / -0

My guess is he'll hold back on joining until after the election. He'll use the threat of it to dissuade twitter from censoring him. On the other hand, if they keep it up, expect to seem him mentioning parler a lot.

1
flashersenpai 1 point ago +4 / -3

Well Gab had its "porn is evil" moment so good luck there.

5
SylvesterInk 5 points ago +5 / -0

They banned porn because it's very hard to police it and prevent illegal content, like child porn. That's how opposition groups try to take down websites, and with all the difficulty Gab has faced during its existence, I don't blame them for trying to mitigate vectors of attack. (Yes, the creator of Gab doesn't approve of porn, since he is a Christian, but he stated that that's not his reason for banning porn in the first place.) That said, Parler bans porn too, so if that's the only issue people have with Gab, then Parler is hardly an alternative. In any case, porn is not classified as "freedom of speech", but rather "freedom of expression", which is NOT constitutionally protected.

1
PepperJackButter2024 1 point ago +1 / -0

In any case, porn is not classified as "freedom of speech", but rather "freedom of expression", which is NOT constitutionally protected.

I found this claim interesting and have done some reading. Can you point me in the direction of anything that suggests any legal distinction ever, anywhere between freedom of speech and freedom of expression?

0
SylvesterInk 0 points ago +1 / -1

I guess freedom of expression is probably too broad a distinction, but I was thinking along the lines of the argument of Miller vs California (1973):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller_v._California

I agree that it's necessary to be wary of how far we go in the interpretation of that decision, as it can indeed lead to censorship. But at the same time, the concept of freedom of speech was put into place for the exchange of ideas and political protection, not to endorse wank material. That said, I can hardly fault sites like Gab for disallowing it, especially considering there are a far larger number of sites providing exclusively that type of material in a much more easily searched and categorized presentation.

0
PepperJackButter2024 0 points ago +1 / -1

I see what you mean and generally agree in regard to Gab though I think problem #1 there is unstable guy at the top. Dissenter really could be something but they seem determined to hang the albatross of their web browser around its neck.

1
flashersenpai 1 point ago +1 / -0

Then neither of them will be a full alternative to Twitter. Look at what happened with Tumblr.

A bit off topic but it’s funny how reddit changed its app color from a threatening and offensive orange to black. At this point I’m going to start trolling every aspect of entertainment I come across and bitch about offensive words or objects.

e.g. elephant = fat shaming, offensive banana = monkey = black people, offensive

If I see canned food on a website I’m going to bitch about me being on welfare and canned food is all I can afford... ...offensive

And so on and so forth...

Fuck these people

(People=animals don’t matter, reeeeeee!!!! fucking offensive!)

What's better: read the TOS agreement. They collect every shred of data available to the app, including what other apps you have installed, how you use the other apps, device settings, etc. Plus they flat out make you agree that they can use ALL the data in ANY way they want, with anyone they say is a partner or they have an agreement with.

4
SylvesterInk 4 points ago +4 / -0

It doesn't. Parler is more restrictive than Gab, and the community is very corporate. Plus Gab's been through trial by fire, dealing with deplatforming attempts, rejection by payment processors, DDOS attacks, etc. If Parler is legit, it will experience the same issues soon enough, but will it handle those issues as well as Gab did?

Plus the developers of Gab have been proving themselves repeatedly with other services, like Gab Trends (like Drudge Report, but with user curated content) and Dissenter (uncensored comments section for ANY website). Seriously, they've done more than most websites have for freedom of speech on the internet.

2

No app = no longevity . For now Parler Has an app. Gab never stood a chance

2
SylvesterInk 2 points ago +2 / -0

Gab had an app, but it got removed because censorship. They maintained it as an apk that could be side-loaded on Android for a while, but in the end, when they reworked Gab to be part of the Fediverse, they instead gave users the ability to use any Fediverse software to browse Gab. (Most of those pieces of software banned them, but I believe there are some, like Fedilab, that still work.)

The same will happen to Parler, if it is indeed a legit service.

1

SylvesterInk 4 points ago +4 / -0

Look again, Gab's been redesigned and looks much better. It's kind of difficult to build a free speech platform from the ground up while being attacked from all corners.

And even if it did look like garbage, I'd rather sacrifice looks for free speech any day. (I take IRC over Slack, Mumble/Riot.im over discord, etc.) Functionality trounces aesthetics.

Fuck that.

You either let me sign up with a simple variation on the already super crazy password I use, or you can fuck right off.

This will only create an endless loop of me forgetting the password, resetting it to another ridiculous one, and forgetting that one too.

0
ForeverPatriot1776 0 points ago +5 / -5

It's 2020, you should be using a password generator and master pass to access said generator with unique logins for every site you visit gramps. ANYTHING less is irresponsible and asking to get pwned.

7
patriotexpat 7 points ago +8 / -1

Cool, but if the password generator app gets a data breach, it's even worse.

I see password managers as a security liability.

3
ThePragmatist 3 points ago +3 / -0

I agree about ridiculous password requirements, but if one-way encryption fails then EVERYTHING fails.

A proper password manager stores passwords encrypted with your password required to decrypt them. Using a password manager and requiring your password for each use is an option.

1
Strike08 1 point ago +1 / -0

Facebook can link data to generate a complete profile of you. The sites you visit, browser and other identifying methods gives Facebook enough to construct a profile without you having a Facebook account. Even family/friends help Facebook without you knowing. Even vpn usage doesn't do a thing to stop this.

1
InebriatedDaily 1 point ago +1 / -0

An ad profile? So what. Different IP every time I open a browser. Are you saying they know my complete name? They don't. Not legally, anyway. Of course FB and google analytics are delivering most of the ads.

0
Deplora 0 points ago +2 / -2

Twitter is publicly viewable, so nobody needs an account to read everything that's on there. On Facebook, at least some public figures have totally open accounts that I can view everything on without having an account myself. I assume anyone who wants to can make all their Facebook content public.

7
TheMutualist 7 points ago +7 / -0

Twitter is HIGHLY unprofitable in the long term and they know it. Their engagement levels aren't increasing enough to justify the expenses. Younger kids are moving to alternative platforms. Their first profitable year was 2018 but unlike YouTube, they are losing engagements.

4

SylvesterInk 4 points ago +4 / -0

I don't trust Parler, as they seem to be a very corporate-controlled service. (The Neocons are jumping on it pretty quickly too.) The TOS seems to confirm that too. Not only that, but it seems to be pushed a quite a bit on all the conservative sites, from the comments on conservative subreddits, to tweets by select individuals, etc, most notably in the past 2 weeks.

Gab has been around longer, has weathered a lot more attempts to deplatform it, and has developers that are solid supporters of freedom of speech, even if it's speech they don't agree with. They've had an account reserved for Donald Trump for a while now, and the community is currently thriving. They aren't perfect, but their developers are constantly working to improve it.

Personally, I prefer a separation between my name here and my name on Parler. I think the best way is to end your posts here with a small signature like “Find me on Parler at _____”

I think the black Reddit logo is so funny. They will never be allowed to change it back. The first one of these companies, that changed their logo, ever goes back to their regular colors, they will be have to deal with a lot of bad press. The left will never be able to admit that racism isn't an immediate threat to every minority. So Reddit will forever be the alien in black.

If they can attract a spectrum of viewpoints (let's say the party of JFK to Reagan), I'm in.

I thought it was going to end up being another Gab (which last I checked just looked like all of 4chan got a LinkedIn page. Just awful. It might have improved since then, but I never checked back.)

Just checked out the Parler app on the App Store, and they had Epoch Times featured on their ad. That immediately sold me and I just downloaded it. I don’t know if I’ll ever actually use it since I don’t really use social media anymore other than to lurk, but I might.

Lots of Gab fanbois here.

I really don’t understand the push for Gab, I only looked at it once and it was just awful, it looked like most of those people there were banned from everywhere else for a reason.

Anyone else getting stuck at the captcha? I put it in, then it just sits and spins.

I have just heard about it for the first time about half an hour ago. Now I'm seeing it everywhere. I guess I'll be making an account there. I've been told that people who are banned from other platforms have found a home there.
