The headlines keeps saying that Houston ICU's are overflowing. That is bullshit. First, there is substantial SURGE capacity still available. Second, the head of Houston Methodist just said that they operate at 70-80% of ICU NORMALLY! Third, most of the cases 70-80% are NON COVID Fourth, NORMAL CAPACITY is 1330 Beds in a city of 7 million!

Based on that chart and assuming about 30% are currently COVID patients, you would have to triple the number of hospitalized COVID patients to hit actual peak.

they think it will happen in 10 days. Therefore masks and social distancing! Fucking hell, we just went through this it's as if the media just runs the same play over and over and people eat it up.

Their sensationalism is effecting policy. We now have a mask law in Houston and the Governor is going to stall out the reopenings.

Nobody is fucking talking back to the media. It's all one sided coverage.

I need for people here at least to know the facts that come straight from the fucking source so they can spread it elsewhere.

I've quickly turned to disgust at how Abbott is handling the reopening. It's weak and panders to the urban panic mongers

Thank you for the info. They've been running these headlines non-stop in Texas, and I knew something had to be amiss. Social media is also pushing the story that Texas Children's Hospital is opening their beds for overflow? Why do we need to move COVID patients into a children's hospital?

The world OVERFLOW is BULLSHIT. It's called Surge Capacity within hospital parlance. Overflow is linguistic propaganda. Overflow implies there is a lack of capacity. The chart clearly shows there is more capacity available.

I work as an administrator in a hospital. We strive to keep our ICU at 85% capacity.

If we are not at 85% then our workflow is essential incorrect.

The patient census drops to 60% during December to accommodate end of year holiday requests.

Holy shit please make a fucking post and explain to people how this shit works! They are running this shit non stop in my city and even my medical professional friends are banging on the table saying that there are no more beds! Abbot Fucked Up! Wear a mask! Drump is a moron we iz ded!

Turner & Hidalgo love scaring people. The local news won't challenge them on the capacity numbers, they just lap up the press conferences.

I really fucking hate Houston these days. All of the POC's congregate in the city limits and vote for morons like Hidalgo, Lee, Turner, and all the other POC politicians just to stick it to whitey.

CDC says that IFR is 0.26%, here in Houston it is closer to 0.10% but fuck if anyone ever even thinks about talk about it.

I'm with you. Hidalgo absolutely pisses me off every time I see her. Absolute tyrant. The gym I go to is going to end up being shut down because of that idiot.

"Surge capacity" of about 900 extra beds. This means they will be converting regular rooms into ICU rooms. Not ideal, but NOT a crisis. Keep Calm

"It is completely normal for us to have ICU capacities that run in the 80s and 90s," Methodist Hospital CEO Dr. Marc Boom said. "That's how all hospitals operate."

They will just discharge or transfer ICU patients if they need the beds. COVID-19 quarantine for observation does not require ICU. Minimal care ward at best. However ICU bills at a much greater rate than the MCW.

Dude, according to the chart, there's an extra 1500 beds. We're at under 50% of TOTAL capacity.

I could be wrong. I saw ~1300 Normal ICU beds, and 2200 Maximum Surge capacity. I can see that the chart has another 600 beds, but I wasn't sure where that comes from. Either way... everyone needs to CALM THE F*** DOWN

The Fake News media is doing it on purpose. A girl I know who does PR for Texas Childrens just posted a press release from the CEO's of the hospital systems saying that there is a surge but they are well within their capacity. It is a bit legalistic in phrasing, but they put this thing out to counter the panic inducing statement by the media.

Which version of the story will run on the evening news though?
