Google's entire black workforce is only 2% of their employees. The only time I've seen a black developer at my work is when they hired a few of my college friends who were black after I vouched for them and gave the company recruiter their contact info. Asians make up 40% of their employees.
I worked for a Jewish owned restaurant. They had multiple locations and I worked at one for years saw many people come and go. They only hired one black male I could remember, he lasted less than a week. Other than that half the employees were illegals. Some of whom spoke no English at all.
Isn't that every restaurant though? I worked at a very fancy Italian restaurant and instead of Mario in the kitchen it was Manuel. Not to say they weren't a great bunch of guys though.
Yes since I'm not very far from the US/Mexico border that part isn't unusual at all. It's just that we had probably 3 girls who were black at any given time as employees we never had one black guy.

Software jobs especially, where pursuit of the career follows a youth hobby (hard to do if you're don't have a computer in the house, as many black families didn't until recently). That is changing as more black children grow up with computers.
Computer network jobs have a pretty even balance for the local population, because that is more accessable as a learnable trade rather than an extension of a hobby interest.
We really are short for some jobs, at least for a while. H1B visas are meant to bring the best/brightest into the US to fill those gaps, but it is definitely abused to find lower-wage candidates and avoid the necessity of on the job training.
