But what about systemic racism?!?

Its bullshit. It comes down to good parents and good personal choices.

Desertwhale 51 points ago +52 / -1

Interesting thing is she credits her mother and teachers for her success. No mention of a father. Not surprising, but good for her!

morningpancakes 24 points ago +24 / -0

Theres always an exception to the rule. Statistically speaking, fatherless homes are detrimental.

Trumpede 21 points ago +21 / -0

Well, I wonder if she would have received as much, or be on the news, if she were white. That, right there, is racism.

Good parents and faith that there is a moral purpose in life.

I was a bit lost as to why this news article was relevant.

They'll say next that it was an all black school then have CNN take some pictures then black face them in photoshop, though it is possible it's an all black school though.

Looking at the photos such as turtlehead. It is all black or nearly all black but with non-black teachers. Still doesn't detract from the achievement but makes it a bit weak as evidence against systematic / systemic racism. That's of no concern anyway as there was never proof of that racism in the first place. Coming first is coming first and she's obviously not racist citing her white teacher's contributions.

What really disturbs me is that it looks as though they let a few boys go to the girls school.

My brother HATES my dad for physically disciplining 10 of us (yet surprise, we're all decent people and as far from violent as it gets). He calls it abuse. So I brought up how 64%of black people are raised by single parents. Their single parent is far too busy providing a living and working their ass off and have no time to teach and discipline them, but beat the shit out of them while not having a good relationship.

He called me racist and angrily reacted, "oh so it's black people's fault. Black people are just criminals huh! Racist!"

Wtf???

Dedication and hard work pays off..doesnt matter what color you are.

23
DeusVult2020 23 points ago +38 / -15

The color of her skin DID matter. White kids don't get scholarships for attendence

AccipiterQ 30 points ago +36 / -6

She was Valedictorian

10
vinnychase 10 points ago +10 / -0

I was valedictorian and didn't get even close to that amount from over 20 combined scholarships

I think we can all admit her color played an important role in accruing nearly half a million in free money. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous and motivated by PC culture. We can all celebrate her achievement and recognize that it's exorbitant at the same time. We're not fucking overcompensating bigots!

17
PatrickSebast 17 points ago +19 / -2

It probably played some role but when news stories give these numbers they are usually adding the value of multiple offers from multiple schools so she probably isn't getting anywhere near half a million once she chooses a school and eliminates the other scholarships

9
DeusVult2020 9 points ago +12 / -3

Sorry, affirmative action exists. How many middle american white valedictorians end up with half a million dollars in sccholarships? Eaaaattttt shit

I've got to imagine the perfect attendance thing is just a coincidence and not a major factor in getting the $$$. She couldn't be a C student w/ perfect attendance and be in this position. Probably had a lot of letters of recommendation, etc. Sounds like a go-getter or at least has a mom putting academic pressure on her.

So, maybe a disproportionate amount of scholarships (more than a non-black or non-female kid would get w/ same the marks) but if she applied for a shit ton and got them I say good on ya. Don't hate the player hate the game.

2
HanAssholeSolo 2 points ago +4 / -2

I don't care what color anyones' skin is, perfect attendance is a rare and amazing achievement in itself. This is a hard working young adult with a very bright future.

3
DeusVult2020 3 points ago +5 / -2

You agree that the people that gave here the scholarships care tho right?

1
HanAssholeSolo 1 point ago +4 / -3

I highly doubt it. I think they care she’s a valedictorian who never missed a day of school.

Unfortunately, because of Affirmative Action programs, she may be viewed as less qualified than her peers, despite probably being in the upper 90% percentile.

Notice they did not mention even one of the scholarships. No way to research veracity or requirements of the half million dollar donation.

This beautiful girl has a strong future ahead of her.

God bless her.

4
AccipiterQ 4 points ago +4 / -0

Gee, I wonder if she was out burning down local businesses the past month? Oh, right, she probably wasn't because she had actual productive things to work on. Well done.

My step-daughter did that too but got no scholarships. Of course, she is White.

Isn't America great? If you are a performer, and demonstrate it, you won't need the government to give you free college. Colleges will beg you to come there.

Proof that hard work and persistence will get anyone ahead in America. That's all it takes.

NO PARTICIPATION TROPHIES. TROPHIES ARE FOR WINNERS.

2

She'll just need another 400k to pay her way through.

2
BlinkinSun 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yah... I didn’t miss a day either and graduated with a 4.25 GPA, plus almost aced the SATs and got absolutely nothing.

I think that my white privilege is broken.

1

I'm glad she is an American and not an illegal alien.

She will have to live down the affirmative action left-taint, unfortunately, but it sounds like she earned her reward. Awesome.

Maybe her kids can have a father to credit, too: through her good life choices.

1
googurt 1 point ago +1 / -0

Let's hope she isn't radicalized in college and comes out as a marxist. What a waste of an intelligent, beautiful woman that would be.

1
VonBustacap 1 point ago +1 / -0

Good to see her white privilege paying dividends.

1
Mostprobably 1 point ago +1 / -0

Good for her, but family is more important than career

1
PrivateFluttershy 1 point ago +2 / -1

Sad part is even with that much money it's not going to get her that far with how outrageously expensive college is these days. She better plan on a "normal" four year school if she wants to get the most mileage out of that haul.

3
InLimbo 3 points ago +3 / -0

I will basically place my kids on house arrest before letting any of them take out student loans.

They are a cancer that is crippling young adults financially.

3
Pedeville 3 points ago +3 / -0

I finished school as 18 (didnt want college) and bought my house and car at 19. These idiots studying until they're 25-30 before they start making money will be in debt their whole life

Perfect attendance just means you sent your kid to school sick.

I just don't get the downvoting that happens here.

Your statement is 100% correct.
