On Haiti, as far as I know and recall, the "blacks" and the mulattos united to massacre all "whites". And then the "blacks" united to massacre all the mulattos. In the Dominican Republic, the mulattos instead took power and ended up becoming slave owners. Haiti is today an AIDS-infested hellhole, and the Dominican Republic is a bit better off, though might still in [current year :)] be using slavery.
And names can be incredibly dishonest. For instance with North Korea, whose official name is something like "Democratic People's Republic of Korea", despite not being democratic at all.
