One of the things that occurred in Tom Clancy's Executive Orders comes to mind (spoiler alert):
After Jack Ryan becomes Vice President through a series of political shenanigans, the Capitol is attacked by a suicide bombing Japanese pilot (looooong story, there was a little war, etc.) Anyways, now thrust into Presidency since the POTUS was killed, he puts out a big announcement to the country that all these reps and senators and political officials are dead, and he wants regular people to replace them, not "career politicians". Cue teeth gnashing and butthurt from hundreds of polisci majors around the country.
Anyways, the tale of Cincinnatus, and more recently George Washington, needs to take a more prominent role in our political system. Only those with life experience in the real world, and with the humility to do their duty and step down at the end of their service, should be in politics. Sick of this bullshit where people make "politician" their career choice. It's a duty, not a fucking employment opportunity.

One of the key things that made Washington such a great man - they wanted to make him king, and instead he set a de facto policy of only two terms that lasted for generations and was eventually enshrined in the constitution.
