long ago liberal arts degrees were what the very rich would go to school for because it would provide them with "culture". because they came from money they very likely did not have to worry about learning marketable skills in order to be financially secure, so the "culture" aspect was literally to make young men and women not be boring when they'd go to high society functions like balls and the like.
