The lefties in MPLS think that they have a "veto proof" majority. There is no veto between the mayor and the city council. The city council passes approved bills to the mayor and the mayor either signs it or doesn't. After that approval by the mayor, it still has to go to a city wide vote.
The Minneapolis PD is by charter. By state law of Minnesota, Minneapolis has to have a police department. To disband the police department is to rewrite the charter and I highly doubt Minnesota's legislature and senate is going to go along with that. The governor might because he's a little 8itch though. Even if it did though, it still has to pass a vote by the residents of Minneapolis. hint: The residents according to what I'm seeing do not to defund the police. It is mainly people who are outside of Minnesota in lefty suburbs that want to defund the police.
As of right now, the city council approved a name change. Minnesota does that a lot in order to solve problems. We just change the names. For instance, we don't technically have a Democrat party. We have a Democrat-Farmer-Labor party because farmers and laborers didn't want to be democrats so they just changed the name. We did that with our department of health and social services too - it's called the Department of Children, Families, Safety and Learning. Basically, the new name of our MNPD is Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention
