The town I live in is about 40ish miles outside a major D city and our council and sheriffs have a 'zombie apocalypse' plan to deputize the local gun owners and block the rails and roads that connect them in the case of an 'outbreak'. We actually had a dry run back in 2015 when the unrest was looking like it would spill out into the border counties. We had ~300 show up armed and ready and yes there much much kidding and laughter about the number. We certainly felt like spartans waiting on the persian hordes as we watched the news. Estimates from the signups are that we can expect almost a thousand this time if it really cooks off. I'll bet most red counties outside of the city have similar plans.
Something about invoking "the zombie apocalypse plan" and getting a bunch of gun owners together to laugh about the rioting in the big cities is just really wholesome to me.
Our council and sheriffs are based. They have to be to survive as a red county. If the media has gotten whiff of a plan to block rioters moving out of the city into the burbs and outer towns the backlash from the state would have been incredible.
