Hate speech laws are a thing in my state. Technically anything that can be perceived as hateful or insulting towards government authorities is also illegal but not enforced.

"Illegal but not enforced" is one of the biggest tricks governments like to play. If a law is unjustified, then it should be repealed.

As soon as you make powerful enemies, even if you acted completely within the law, the authorities will start scrutinizing everything you have done over the last 10+ years in the hope you broke some unknown law. That way, they can get you in front of a judge and screw up your life.

This is more well known in employment. Always be very skeptical if you are encouraged to break the rules at work, even if "everyone does it" or "my manager told me to do it". Only exception is if you have written proof from your superior. It is a classic way for companies to fire people that they wouldn't normally be able to fire due to employment law.
