Yes indeed. I grew up with public schooling and heard again and again about MCarthy being a paranoid loony who unjustly persecuted people, so I accepted their designation of "McCarthyism" being synonymous with that behavior. They were SO afraid of him, and he was SO right.

It's ironic they used to tell us "McCarthyism" is all about blacklisting people because of their beliefs, yet they deny Cancel Culture is even a real thing.

The blacklisting wasn’t Joe. It was the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, or HUAC. Joe was a Senator, and JFK’s best friend in the Senate.
