Jordan Peterson has been saying this for years. Especially young activists who basically can't get their own house in order so they seek out "Pseudo-moralistic Stances" they can be outraged about as a distraction.
Relevant smack down of one of these people by Peterson:
It's really what he does for a living. He's a highly skilled clinical psychologist who helps people get their lives on track. He's seen this kind of activist psychosis over and over.
I didn’t think there was anyone left on the internet that hadn’t heard of him. You should watch a few of his videos. He’s a character and he’s got a hell of a lot interesting things to say about the way people today are acting
It's not just that and I think his message is more accurate than the OP. They want and need the world to be evil but not just because it is a welcomed distraction about their inabilities and so they can outraged. But because they need it to be true to not blame themselves for their failures. I'd bet that often they cannot face themselves in the mirror (metaphorically speaking). It is hard to accept that they were wrong. That all the 'cruel' people telling the real inconvenient truths of the world were right and all the ones that flattered them for their own benefit were wrong. An example would be encouraging someone to pursue the path of a musician or a liberal arts degree versus asking them if they know what they are getting into and are they working 90 hours a week to be as competitive as they will need to be to make it in that passion and why are they even going to college if they want to become a musician and so on.
I forgot about that video. I love the reaction of the leftist who asked the question all smug that she thinks she gave a gotcha moment question only to have it turned around back at her and shakes her head in disgust. People like her don’t want to learn or for things to change, they need it that way so they can be outraged about the topic of the day.

I had never seen that or heard of him. Could explain a lot about these people.

He's got a possible book announcement on the 30th, can't wait!
How I Kicked Benzos In Russia
That’s a book I’d buy.
