War has always been used to kill off surplus males. And you've rightly hit upon another 'benefit' of war--it imposes so much suffering on the male that for many peace then becomes a life long comfort zone. A substitute for 'satisfaction'.
Btw males are "tested" every day--even in Smallsville. Controlling their LUST...focussing on exams and finishing projects when their hormones are screaming to chase skirt; not belting their shit-stirring wife in the gob; not backhanding their kids when disrespected; staying with their incredibly hard and/or boring job; not belting their bully boss, not slitting the throats of punks, and other idiots when sneered at...and not going 'SNAP'--and just robbing a bank (or employer) for a quick money hit.
Not the "first reaction". Probably the 15th. And probably justified. But illegal. The cops of course won't take into account the other 14 provocations; or even know or realise they exist.
