So I think that's partly right. They certainly are projecting their own traumas. But the reason is not for them to have something to be heroic about. Rather, they want to punish someone for the perceived oppression they believe they have experienced (and some of it could be real). They can't attack the original source, so they create this projection out onto the world that they CAN attack.
