It seems that she was denied this promotion in the past, because her previous captain is a Tellarite, and Tellarite values frown on women in high authority positions. So Kirk is like, "That's terrible! I'll go and tell her that we won't let this discrimination stand!"
But when he meets her, turns out she's a GIGANTIC bitch, and blames all of her failings on sexism! Maybe she DOESN'T deserve this promotion after all!

A bunch of added female characters, attempts to address modern issues, but it doesn't get too preachy. A little preachy, but not too much. But it DOES have Lou Ferrigno as an Orion Slaver. Worth watching if you can deal with a little preachiness and would like to see how fans would bridge the gap between the end of the Original Series and the first Trek movie.

Dont know why anyone would voluntarily do it, but this reminds me of back in high school in the 90's when we had open campus for lunch and everyone would walk across the street to the gas station to smoke, and buy these noodles and eat them like this guy does because it would take too long to wait in line to cook them. I've never done it though.
