I got into a debate about this the other day. When you cough into a face covering, the air goes out all of the sides, so do the aerosolized water droplets. You also take in air through the same sides. You can also get coronavirus through your eyes. They produced "studies" articles (WaPo and garbage science sites). I pointed out that their studies said "may help" and social distancing is the most effective. They didn't like that shit one bit.

Face masks are maybe 40% effective. I guess it's something. But when you factor in the eye method of infecting, it makes it even less.

But what do I know? I only have OSHA/NIOSH certifications in supplied air and respirators that covered viruses, along with chemicals/gasses.

Do you recommend wearing a cloth mask in public right now?

TBH, it does reduce your odds a small amount. That has to account for something.

Yeah, that's what gets me about all this. Maybe it kind of helps, and probably does have SOME effect, but considering how low my chances are of getting seriously sick from this thing, I might as well wear a helmet everywhere because if I fall and hit my head, the helmet will protect me. In other words: I'd prefer to just move on with my life and accept the very small risk.
