Here's some recommendations based on my experience: -Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level, especially near/in bedrooms to wake you up at night. Make sure the batteries are changed out twice a year when you change your clocks. New smoke alarms have 10 year sealed batteries. If you have gas appliances you should also have at least one carbon monoxide alarm. -Sleep with your bedroom door closed. The amount of protection you get from a simple interior door is unreal. I've seen houses burn up with the exception of a single room that had a door closed, leaving it untouched by heat and smoke damage. -If you have kids, make sure they know multiple ways out of their bedroom. Have fire drills with them. Make them close their eyes and find their way. Show them how to open or break a window if they absolutely need to go out that way. If your kids are small make sure you have a plan to get in to their bedroom from the outside in case you can't get to them through the hallway. Leave a ladder and a heavy tool in an easily accessible location for emergencies.

Go through mental drills in your head for every possibly worst case scenario that can happen in your home. When the shit hits the fan this will help you function with a clear mind instead of vapor locking.
