Worth noting. The upper (where the bolt carrier rides) is still not chromed in mil spec rifles. The barrel is chrome lined. The chambers are therefore chrome lined as well. But the upper is aluminum and is never internally chromed. Thats where you got me a bit confused. Chrome lined barrels do help with durability, but make little difference in reliability. The rifling lasts longer in chrome lined barrels. That doesnt affect function, rather it affects accuracy. Now, bad accuracy can certainly lead to casualty, but not as fast as a jam.
Care to extrapolate? Always willing to learn. I see it as a spectacular platform that was as close to nearly perfect from inception as any weapon aside from the ak and mauser...
The weapon was never flawed. The powder used was flawed. The cleaning manuals were flawed. The rifle was always fine. Still is.
Calling contact 600 yards out and firing at the cyclic rate until the weapon overheated or ran out of ammo didn’t help.
LONGEST SERVING MAIN BATTLE RIFLE PLATFORM EVAH!
Also terrible 20 round mags meant to be disposable were forced to be re used till they literally fell apart.
Agreed. Our guys deserved better.
I believe the first editions didn't have a chromed receiver (if that's the right word). Fixed it. Was just saying. Doesn't need to trigger anyone
I don't see how a chromed receiver would be of benefit? Maybe easier to clean, but operationally, it shouldn't make much difference if any.
Edit: the move to carbine length had systems increased reliability, supposedly. But also increased wear. Should have gone with mid length, imo.
It made the gun jam in combat, initially, yeah.
