I believe you wouldn't be able to speak with locked-in syndrome. The video shows him singing, "Happy Birthday". I honestly don't know much about it though, so there might be exceptions.
The mere fact that he could respond to jokes is very important. That takes more thinking ability than just blinking at a greeting. Singing, I don't know how much that's possible reflexively, but at any rate I think the doctor was way out of line with his judgement. I suspect the nursing home was tired of caring for the patient because he was never getting on his feet again.
On demand suicide happens all the time. Sometimes the person demands it, sometimes the family, and sometimes the doctors. It really is sad.
This guy sounds like locked-in syndrome which is worse than brain-dead imo. But he doesn't sound like he was asking to die.
