Digg's exodus wasn't even about politics, though. It was simply about power users and manipulated algos that were making it pointless for normal people to participate. That and the UI they kept fucking around with made it really easy to justify moving to reddit, which at the time was very simple and streamlined, and just easier to use than digg. I made the switch around 2007 as well and for a good 5 years reddit was great. Then leftists started getting in control of everything.
