He and his handlers know the #1 rule of politics: if your opponent is hurting himself, just sit back and let them.
Biden knows that he can no longer sit back and let Trump “hurt himself”, because Trump is not hurting himself. He can no longer stay in his basement and stay silent. I don’t care what the Media’s polls are saying, these campaigns’ internal polls are clearly showing something different.
Just like in the primaries, when Biden started to make public appearances, his numbers plummeted.

You are giving him too much credit. The press got assigned questions and he will answer them in order reading off a teleprompter
I'm sure something will happen in that news cycle so they won't have time to show you what he said, just that he had one, and he was brilliant.
So, scripted questions w rehearsed answers, and hidden teleprompters, and he'll still drop a meatball out there for the ages.
