They were lied to. Look at NAFTA, you had Perot telling everyone what was going to happen but both Bush Sr. and Clinton were for it. Perot convinced enough people that it swung the election for Clinton.
Look at Gay marriage, it took the Supreme Court reinterpreting the law to get that passed.
Or even the 1965 immigration act the Ted Kennedy said wouldn't change the demographics of the country.
Or the fact that illegal immigration has been a top concern for voters for 40 years, yet nobody before Trump actually did anything about it.
I can remember my parents ranting about these things when I was a kid, their political positions haven't changed but the politicians have.
