Came to say this. My life and my family's life are worth defending. You don't choose to be put in a situation where you may have to decide between you and your family's lives or a robber's. The robber does. They choose to commit crime that may well get them killed, so I won't shed any tears for someone in that situation

I had this discussion with the guys I work with recently. Most robberies (burglaries?) happen in the middle of the day, when people are at work and the thieves less likely to get caught. So, if someone breaks into my house in the middle of the night, I have to operate under the assumption that they are there for me, not my stuff.

You would not believe how cucked the UK is on self-defense. I had my mind blown talking to a girl from the UK who was so opposed to guns. I said I never really wanted to use one but that if I had a kid and found someone breaking into my house at night they'd get shot without hesitation or remorse. In the summer of 2017 my home was invaded while I was in the house. I own a firearm, but it was in the opposite side of the home, so I was pretty much fucked if it had been a violent criminal. My lucky break happen when saw my dog and ran.
The point of this all is? At what point would calling the cops ever going to help me in that situation? Life handed me the dice, and I just happen to roll well enough to not get a bullet to the brain. Some people aren't so lucky. Protect yourself.

Personally I wouldn't take a life if someone was robbing me. In the converse I don't feel that bad when they die. Robbers should expect to die every time. It's in the job description. They know what they're getting into.
Yeah you have to make the risk higher than the cost of what they seek to steal. That's the idea behind the castle doctrine. It's a deterrent. The existence of an unknown number of weapons that could be used against you in a home invasion should deter the fuck out of most would-be criminals. Good defenses make good neighbors.
