Personally I wouldn't take a life if someone was robbing me. In the converse I don't feel that bad when they die. Robbers should expect to die every time. It's in the job description. They know what they're getting into.

Yeah you have to make the risk higher than the cost of what they seek to steal. That's the idea behind the castle doctrine. It's a deterrent. The existence of an unknown number of weapons that could be used against you in a home invasion should deter the fuck out of most would-be criminals. Good defenses make good neighbors.
