Any tips on the best VPN? I would normally ask on reddit but.... cyber security is only going to get more important.

You want a VPN vendor that's based in a country that does not have data retention rules/laws outside of the US. They can likely never be compelled to give records to US law enforcement or any government. Also, they should have a "no logging" policy. I use NordVPN (Panama) and PIA (US) as a backup.

Alternatively, you can use TOR browser. TOR is generally used to access the dark web but works just as well on the www. It uses onion routers and encryption to access the web which obfuscates users identity and geo location. Your web traffic is randomly bounced around multiple relays and routers for security.

Is there any credence to the claim the FBI own half the relays and routers?

I have read that there are planted FBI/DOJ relays in the TOR network. But the nature of the encryption used and the way TOR relays work makes it difficult for them to glean very much user information or actually track someone's movements. My understanding is that the FBI would have to own the entry point relay you happen to be hitting and the website you visit for them to figure out who you are.

Thank you, you helped put my mind at ease and inspired me to look more into my own cyber security.

At this point a faraday cage isn't out of the questions.

Unfortunately, there is no one grand solution to security. A layered security approach is best to increase complexity and their cost of getting their hands on your data packets. Stay safe, Fren.
