My parents’ town was the same - when they retired they put all their money into buying a nice (but relatively modest) home in a small, quiet wine country town in CA. Homes averaged $700k in this neighborhood. Across the street and facing them was a beautiful open meadow with a line of mature trees. It’s one of the main reasons they bought the house. 10 years later, the county suddenly came in and plowed all the 70+ year old trees down and announced they were building several “Section 8 affordable housing units”, to comply with CA/fed regulations. The value of their house plummeted. They finally sold their house at a loss and moved into assisted living much sooner than they planned. It really caused a big financial downfall for them.
