I think what makes it more believable is the fact that it came out long after he was in the spotlight. If she's really just doing this for money, she picked the wrong time to do it, because Adam Savage hasn't been relevant for years, and neither are the reruns of mythbusters. Since then, all Adam Savage has done is a youtube channel and some minor cameo's in a few shows. But he's certainly not raking in the dough.
Compare that to Kavanaugh, where he was about to become a Supreme Court Justice. Christine Ford had every incentive to lie. Compare that to all the other incidences where men were framed and extorted because there was something to gain from it. She has very little to gain here.
On top of that, her family literally disowned her when she told them about it and they wanted her to bury it and pretend like it never happened. Now imagine you're in her shoes. You never said anything when he was most relevant and in the spotlight, you tell your family and it ends up getting you disowned because successful brother's reputation can't be tainted, they're too proud of him or just don't want to accept it. So you lose your family, after all these years of keeping quiet about your rapist brother who raped you for years growing up, after having been told to just let it go? I think anyone would be pissed and that would be the final straw.
The timing of these things often says a lot. There is no benefit in the timing of this. There are no TV show or movie studios to extort for hush money. And coming out public, certainly isn't going to get hush money either, because you can't extort someone if you've already spoken public about the "fake" thing they say you're extorting them with. So really, her motivation can't be to extort him. So then what is her motivation if she's making it up?

Even as a kid back when I watched the show, I could tell Jamie was doing the heavy lifting and that Adam might be able to help in some capacity but that he was mainly there for comedic effect and to dance and sing while the real engineers were working.
