I hear people saying he was racist and only cared about the Union. That he only freed the slaves to punish the south and wouldn't have done it otherwise. It isn't like he led a party that was created to free the slaves but whatever.
Really didn't help that the South had aims of conquering the Caribbean and establishing continuous territory to the pacific. Part of why the South fought so hard even after General Lee's surrender was to bring about the riches and glory of a potential subtropical empire.
