Back when I was in school (2000s) we had NY state social studies tests in elementary/middle school and Regents tests in high school. We had a pretty rigorous state testing program compared to some other states, but we also had a Republican governor until 2006.
It looks like NY got rid of the elementary and middle school social studies tests when they switched to common core around 2010 as that is the last year they have the old tests available online. It looks like Common Core only has tests for English, math and science.
