The polls were MUCH tighter. The Realclear average was 3.3% and it ended up 2.1%

You aren't "learning" anything. What you need to do is learn to ignore any sources that show you polling numbers without linking to the underlying data set that shows the skew. Polls are useless unless you know who was sampled. Were there more Democrats or Republicans? Polls almost always oversample Democrats to get the results they want.
