He deserves a promotion, but I wouldn't wish it to the Federal level (although the Feds need men like him). He'd be put in some little spot where he'd be the new guy and a few of the swamp rats in the Federal gov would have an easy time giving him a meaningless position with little to no actual authority. They could circumvent him with relative ease even if he was appointed to a huge post by our President. Meanwhile, his post as sheriff might be filled by a mediocre person.

Volunteer police are equally and sometimes more devoted because they are volunteers who get the same training, same shooting time, the same protections as paid ones. They just want to be law and order cops. And they love the paid ones, too. Less liability, too, as Reserves have protections that make them protected against frivolous lawsuits.
