Our last war with Canada was 1812. We haven't fought Mexico since the Mexican-American war (although we do have a problem with the cartels and illegal immigration, but we are not at war with the official Mexican government and in fact, just modified a trade treaty with them). So in reality, we are one of the LAST nations to just go start expanding and playing around with land grabs. Also, unlike most territories of developed, Western nations, we actually do not in any way oppose any of our territories from breaking off from us. We allow our territories to vote for their own government and even hold referendums on joining the U.S.

The OP is wrong to say that North America is most recent. It's actually some of the oldest. WWI and WWI both resulted in massive land transfers and there have been many wars since. Right of conquest is still an internationally recognized and supported concept.
