The citizen faces the same calculus as the private security companies. I highly doubt the laws are in favor of either one if someone ends up injured or worse. The house value is far lower than the prospective cost of losing a civil or criminal suit to a protester. On the flip side, the chances of prosecuting anyone if the house burns or the couple gets injured are low. Authorities probably won't intervene for anyone besides the mayor. This should chill everyone witnessing this to the bone and we should remember that when voting for our local government, law enforcement and judiciary. Whatever you may think of the couple, credit should go to them for facing their situation as bravely as they are. They could have asked others for help or pleaded their case on national television and chose not to.
I can't believe someone downvoted that!
