It's actually not a shithole. That's the scary part. I live about 10 miles from where this happened. I would say our community is about 95% white. This kind of scary shit is spreading beyond the typical areas.

Just checked the jurisdiction. Not great. 7th most Democrat county in Michigan. 44% voted for Trump.
Hence the malicious prosecution with both of them charged with felonious assault. Any non-Democrat jurisdiction would probably charge the woman with brandishing and call it a day, but Democrats love to maliciously prosecute defensive firearm use cases. Worse for them is that they are likely to get stuck with either a Democrat jury or a Democrat judge deciding their fate. I hold out little hope for them.
This needs to be addressed. If the law doesn't mean what it says anymore, and you can't protect yourself from people of color when they want to keep it real, then we're going to have some big problems very soon.

DOJ should investigate this clear racism and force that PD into a consent decree to protect all people equally regardless of race. They should sue that DA as well as the cops did not recommend charges, but were forced to arrest by the racist DA.

That said: if you pull a gun, shoot. If you don't intend to shoot, don't pull the gun. If I was in this couple's place, I would've stayed in the vehicle, rolled up the windows and called the cops. If then a window was bashed in and someone was grabbed or struck, the white couple would be justified to shoot in their own defense.
The arrest itself is not particularly outrageous - when a firearm is used, even legally, you should expect to be arrested. What happens from then on depends on how good your lawyer is. If they have a good lawyer, they'll get out of it, but it'll cost them time, aggravation and $$$. Had they turtled in the vehicle and called the cops, it's the two screaming bitches that would have had to answer.
