It was a bad draw. Brandishing when not under deadly threat is felony assault in most states.
This specific law to the letter often includes "threat of bodily harm" which is true in Michigan where this occurred. The threat of bodily harm is evident at 0:43 when the black woman threatened to "beat his white ass too".
In my classes it was only threats like loss of life or limb, which is why its recommended to carry pepper spray for threats of violence which dont merit brandishing.
You are correct that in quite a few states unless it's "grave injury" lethal arms is not allowed. Hope people don't downvote you for that. But in Michigan it is written as "great bodily harm" which any competent lawyer will argue is possible considering a threat was indeed issued, and their vehicle (their means of escaping) has been prevented from leaving.
Some are even saying the white lady was pregnant (but I cannot verify). If true this makes her self defense case even stronger.
Any violence against a pregnant lady can kill her child, so it seems to me that's a fairly significant, even deadly threat.

if a pregnant woman is not allowed to defend herself from two people physically threatening her- AFTER an entire month of out of control black violence in the news- then how the fuck did we get that law in the first place.

They could have defended themselves by running the lady over. They were never blocked by an object that would prevent their vehicle from escaping.
Is that not assault with a deadly weapon?
You don't know how threatened they felt. They had multiple people surrounding their car and threatening them.
Then she should have shot. In my training, brandishing without shooting is usually a guaranteed felony. Essentially if you werent threatened enough to shoot, you should not have brandished. Blocking a car is not a legitimate threat of grave bodily harm.
Tell that to a 120lb woman having her car blocked by a couple of 200lb men.
They will have to convince either jury or judge that they were reasonably in fear for their lives. Based on what I've seen from the video, that's going to be a tough one.
