Trump had his pay from NBC and speeches etc given to his charity. He would then disperse it as he would see fit. For instance one of the cases was when he was sued by City of Palm Beach for erecting a 150ft flag pole on Mar-A-Lago. He wouldn't take it down so eventually he settled if he made a donation of (I think) $150k to a veterans group. So he paid from his foundation.
Another one was he was at a charity event and purchased a painting of himself (that he paid to have painted) at a charity auction for $200k. He paid for it from his charity. Then hung it in his golf club
Those are the 2 'violations' that the NY AG found so he just settled caying he couldn't run a charity.
