I always get a good chuckle when people try to tell me that 22s aren't a good self defense weapon.... I shot .22 caliber and .25 caliber in competition when I was a teenager... I would much much much rather get shot with a couple of 9 mm rounds than a shit load of 22 or 25 rounds, and there's generally going to be a shitload of them considering how many can fit in the average gun and just how fast and easy you can put them on target.

I suppose that might be slightly true if you don't know how to aim though.... But there's a reason that .22 is the assassins choice and, on top of that, with almost no recoil you can put a whole bunch of rounds in a real tiny space.

As long as you're not a police officer trying to take down a naked man on PCP wielding 2 samurai swords, then a .22 will do everything you need it to do, especially if someone is afraid of strong recoil or maybe for a small lady or something.

Never try to subdue a large caliber man with a small caliber round.

Wweeeelllll not neccesarily....does a concrete nailer count? In all reality though best home defense without penetrating your target and catching whoever is in the next room over? Kel-tec ksg12 with alternating rounds. Rock salt then bird shot then double 00

Hell, take a look at CCI's Segmented HP round

Caliber 22 LR Bullet Weight 32 Bullet Style Segmented Hollow Point Muzzle Velocity 1640

Plenty of you tube vids, totally devastating round, designed for both 2 and 4 legged varmints..

Put a few of these in the upper thorax and or pelvis region, even the noggin, and say good night...

There are more people killed by .22LR in the United States every year, than any other round. It's not a good stopper (CNS destruction) out of a pistol barrel, but it's very effective at causing people to bleed out over the course of 30 minutes.

Another thing people tend to forget, is that modern ammunition, loaded in older calibers like 22LR and 9MM, is significantly more powerful than loadings available 60-70 years ago. More powerful both in terms of ballistics, due to better powders, and terminal effect, due to better bullets.

This is the reason the FBI abandoned the .40S&W chambering; their testing discovered that modern 9MM ammo surpassed the original criteria of the .40, while subjecting the shooter to lower recoil, allowing faster follow-up shots, with more rounds in the magazine. .40 is basically obsolete. .45 would be too, if it didn't have a niche as a subsonic option.

Bottom line, I wouldn't choose a 22LR for self defense, but if I had to, it would be a carbine. Out of a 12-16" barrel, a hot 22LR like a CCI stinger is plenty deadly, and has similar muzzle energy to a WWII era 9MM Luger round.

I'm looking at getting a ruger 10/22 as my first long gun. I never shot a long gun before and internets say that is great as baby's first rifle.
