Because like it or not, Sanders isn't that far left in regards to his policies, he's just left. Not a moderate. The spectrum goes way way further as seen the last couple of years. Sanders was a traditional left guy, mainly focused on economic issues and believed most social problems stemed from their economical situation.
The problem with the left and also Sanders, is that they didn't denounced the regressive left. You can acknowledge some of their concorns as it's rooted to some degree in reality, without acknowledging their ideology and idiocracy of exaburated minor neclectable details blown up beyond proportion.
