I can remember how Ronald Reagan was treated-'Ronnie Raygun'-the only real difference is, the internet was teeny back then, so there were no echo chambers and amplifications. It was mainly in snotty dead tree liberal media that the hatred for RR was visible. Plus, bad as US education has been for decades, it hadn't deteriorated quite so badly in the 1970s and 1980s as it would later. Some schools back then were still teaching Palmer method penmanship (in which we pretended capital Qs were virtually indistinguishable from the number 2, on pain of an F) and phonics. I truly believe the deliberate and malicious destruction of phonics is the source of 90% of the problems with education, with the changing of Civics into the utterly loathsome "social studies" being the other 10%.
They spent almost 6 months trying to overturn the election, they called him literally hitler, the media went after his service record (Dan Rather was fired over it thankfully,) the media constantly tried to insult his intelligence (Comedy Central had a sitcom about him by the creators of South Park... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That%27s_My_Bush!) and the only reason they didn't pick it up for a 2nd season was because 9/11 happened and they didn't want to risk the pushback. They even went after his adult aged daughters going to bars while at college while at UT Austin. "College girls drink??? SHOCKING!!!"
They definitely went after him hard, not as hard as they go after GEOTUS, but they were definitely running the same playbook..

Two main differences - The Overton window has shifted WAY further to the left, and the fringe has gotten a lot bigger and noisier.
