The point of preventing secession was because we were all supposed to be Americans. You can't fight to reunite Americans and kill hundreds of thousands, say "We are and always were one" and then turn to the soldiers that got drafted and say, "Except you who answered the call."
You aren't getting what the statues stand for. They are part of the history. Good or bad, you can't and shouldn't forget history.
