You ABSOLUTELY need to read David McCullough's books on Teddy Roosevelt and Harry Truman. They are masterpieces

John Adams is one of my favorite books. It makes you feel like you were there talking to them. It paints the whole story of the revolution based on the letters, the actual conversations between all the main players! The HBO series is great too!
