Well done. Vietnam is supposed to be a cool place to travel now. The new China, but not asshoe.

Been there a number of times. One of my favorite countries to visit. Beautiful country and people, and love me some pho. Stay south though, in general. The further north you get, the more anti-American the sentiment is.

The further north you get, the more anti-American the sentiment is.

Nah.

The government keeps up the propaganda facade because they have no idea how to really break it at this point, but they've pretty much entirely shifted away from their old anti-US viewpoint. Mostly out of a direct reaction to Chinese aggression.

Remember, the conflict with the US is incredibly recent. After pushing China's asshole in, which on that note China has never won a ground war, sentiment shifted pretty hard back to hating China. Pretty much every single SEA state hates China. They've all hated China and their endless aggression for over a thousand years.

If we capitalize on that anti-Chinese sentiment we could incredibly easily form an even stronger regional pact, which is kinda what Trump has been doing. Just needs to directly shit on China more and stop calling the Tiny Dragon Emperor a good guy.

I've been here for 7 months now, spent most of my time in the middle but have been north and south. I would rate sentiment towards china as quite negative, and sentiment towards the u.s. as neutral. Nothing against them, but a lot of the white foreigners here are cheap backpackers or sexpats, and people here associate white ppl with europe/the u.s. Some of the backpackers even resort to begging in hanoi and saigon. These things don't help America's reputation here, on the ground level with local folks.

There is an ongoing debate at the governmental level as to whether and how closely Vietnam should ally with the US in combatting china. VN seems reluctant to take any decisive action or make any firm commitment, but tries to maintain good relations with the u.s. - ex. allowing the u.s. to dock an aircraft carrier at tien sa port in danang this march. They need at least the plausible threat of allying with the u.s. in order to stave off Chinese advances. China is asserting itself more and more, taking away islands and fishing areas eg, and VN may be pushed into requesting direct aid from the u.s. at some point.

Much of vietnamese history is an ebb and flow between independence and subjugation to the chinese. It is very possible VN will return to being a de facto vassal state in the coming decades - people already complain about growing influence from China over politicians.

As an aside, in many ways vietnam is more capitalist with less bureaucracy than the u.s., which is both sad and amusing. However weak rule of law and government corruption hinders growth, though we are still likely to see a ton of growth in the coming years as a ton of foreign owned chinese factories are relocating to vietnam. The new generation is also incredibly entrepreneurial, suggesting positive headwinds economically. Additionay there is no entitlement mentality- people accept their lot and either accept being a poor lazy fuck, or work hard to achieve something. There are 70 - 80 year old grandmas here that push a large vending cart to a market/street corner in the morning, sell food all day, and push it back home at night to make something like $10/day, 6 days a week. And for the most part they seem content/fulfilled. The welfare state, imo, has really killed this kind of attitude. Some of these entitled "revolutionaries" should do what these old women do for a day, I really doubt they could handle it

I can’t speak for what your experiences have been, but as I said I’ve been to the country a number of times and that’s been what I repeatedly saw. In general, in Saigon and the surrounding areas the people are very positive towards Americans and curious about us. As you get north, there’s a distinct shift in the peoples attitudes. I’m not talking about government attitudes. People are suspicious about your motives, and not-infrequently are openly derogatory about America.

3
Killroyomega 3 points ago +3 / -0

No comment on my experiences other than that the vast majority of the students, researchers, and government officials I've talked to are fully supportive of an alliance with America.

The threat of China is too much.

There's a reason why Trump went there and was greeted with thunderous applause.

After decades of propaganda the older generation is suspicious, but they aren't stupid. Like I said in the other post the history with China is far longer, more toxic, and fosters infinitely more anger than anything with the US.

They're still communist, and that's a huge problem, but with the right pressure and good support they will almost certainly shift out of it.

That's because China is only interested in ruling the world (while cleverly claiming they are only interested in their historical borders.).

Bax101 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yea because after Vietnam communism rolled in. Especially in Cambodia with Phillpot at the beginning of 1975. The US was running a secret operations in Cambodia and Laos that is well known during the Vietnam War. Millions of people died in Cambodia under Philpott after the US withdrawal.

Amen. As Vietnamese, I proud to be an American although my heritage is Vietnamese. My Father fought for South Vietnam Navy (American Side). After Communist took over South Vietnam, my father fleet to Thailand temporary before he was granted to live in the USA legally. Right now, the USA is less racist and more freedom than Vietnam and China. I am very sad some of my Vietnamese Community, especially the young people, supported BLM and Crazy Bernie, same Ideology that my father escape from Communist Vietnam. Anyway, the US is a country that I very thankful for. The US will never be a Ho Chi Minh Country or Socialist Country. I support President Trump for Four More Years in the White House. God bless the USA and Happy Fourth of July!

My vietnamese family absolutely hate communists and any pull towards that. They went through brainwashing camps, book burnings, theft of private property like gold for redistribution to lazy fuckers... a lot of the new generation of american born vietbamese are total clueless SJWs though

Khmer (Cambodians) are also based af and are also on board.

I saw a story a few years ago about a coffee shop run by leftist do-gooders that put up a portrait of Ho Chi Minh; local Vietnamese chimped out and almost burned the place down!

Asians have an average IQ of 105 - white people only 100.

So why are they so clueless ?

To not understand that the Democrat Party - which is openly limiting their numbers in good colleges RACIALLY is not their friend ?

They fled communism in China and Vietnam - and now they are voting for a Democrat Party which supports communism ?!

12
esperhunter [S] 12 points ago +12 / -0

Uhh try not to focus on unintentionally made mistakes of the long past, what matters now is that they chose the right path once presented. I do not understand your position but I will say you should care more about their intention to preserve our freedom than their being fooled by the Dems in the past. I mean the Dems fooled every one for decades so have some sympathy you self righteous bastard

-5

Your message makes no sense at all. Incoherent.

2
cluckingducks 2 points ago +2 / -0

the Dems fooled every one for decades

Jesus Christ. Esper says this with a straight face. No. They didn't fool everyone. They may have fooled people like him/her....

I'm with you slappy and have no idea why you are getting dinged.

0
Binmap1412 0 points ago +1 / -1

He's getting dinged because he's calling Asian people dumb for not voting red. People can vote for whoever they want.

-1
slaphappy2 -1 points ago +1 / -2

Yeah, sometimes this site is very puzzling.

Certainly, supporters of the Democratic Party would want to ding my post - maybe there are a lot of Democrat Party trolls on this site - it's rather odd.

0
Binmap1412 0 points ago +2 / -2

Because it seem like you're calling Asian people dumb for not voting Red. Most Asian live in Blue state. Surrounded by liberals. Before the impeachment I had 0 interest in politics. I'm sure most of us Asian was the same way. Your post is ignorant too. There's other Asian beside Vietnamese and Chinese.

1
slaphappy2 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yeah, if the shoe fits, wear it. I know plenty of Asian people - and I know Asians who have escaped from Communist China - who have had relatives killed.

They are DISGUSTED at Asians who vote Democrat.

They have a lot stronger language to use for them than the language I just used.

You want to bring it ? Bring it, dude.

6
Robmak3 6 points ago +6 / -0

IQ and basing your thoughts of someone off an average IQ for a whole race is perhaps the dumbest thing you could do. Relentlessly obsessing over IQ ignores the fact that we're all created equal and have equal opportunities, some of the dumbest people in this country are the richest because they have properly used their talents to make money. (Hint hint, Hollywood, sports)

Understand the arguments the democrats are using to make a better argument yourself. They leech on to people who don't understand the American values of individualism, government, and society. They talk about victims and problems, while offering the worst solutions for them. That's why Bernie Sanders lost in 2020- people who voted for him in 2016 realized his snake oil solutions to the problems he talked so much about. (Also Elizabeth Warren factored in, but thats another story)

There is lots of evidence that the average IQ of nations matters a great deal. IQ isn't everything, but it's not irrelevant either.

If a nation had an average IQ of 70, how advanced do you think that nation could be? There are real life examples close to this and the results aren't pretty.

4
Robmak3 4 points ago +4 / -0

IQ is just a number.

The success and advancement of nations is based on geography, economics, opportunities, and society.

One great example is China. For the last 200 (or more) years they've been in the hell of civil war, opium war, rape of Nanjing, Mao's famine, Cultural Revolution. 50 years ago they would've been one of the biggest failures on the planet, and one of the least advanced nations. What changed wasn't IQ, what changed was societal organization, economics, and opportunities for development.

Or take Venezuela. 20 years ago they would've been the richest nation in South America... why were they the richest and most advanced? What changed? IQ wasn't the factor.

Most of African geography is shit for economic development backed up by tribes, corruption and other political inconveniences getting in the way of everything. They don't have a surplus of food to build civilization upon, and they don't have navigable rivers or infrastructure built to trade upon

2
cluckingducks 2 points ago +2 / -0

Nice piece Rob. I'll add that as for freedom loving, Europe and Britain were the places where individualism and freedom of thought flourished. As far as I know, there was no equivalent to John Locke or Oliver Cromwell in Asia. Nothing like the Greeks or early Rome was happening.

1
Robmak3 1 point ago +1 / -0

I don't know if youre trying to discount the east, but they've contributed quite a lot to philosophy, but it's hard to see it from a western perspective (as we're built on the enlightenment). Daoism (very similar to Libertarianism), Confucism ("to put the world in order, we must put the nation in order, to put the nation in order, we must put the family in order..."), legalism (very similar to Machiavelli, a form of totalitarianism), buddhism.

Also might be pretty hard to see it because of the Cultural Revolution and Mao's banishment of the four olds.

Nothing compared to the early Greeks or Romans in terms of advancement? You gotta go see the world, man. Pyramids, the grand canal, the Angkor Wat, the forbidden city, the great wall. There was quite a lot going on in the world other than the west.

2
cluckingducks 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'm pushing hard on 60. I've seen enough of the world from a military perspective to know that here is where "it's at".

Whatever you may think, the eastern life outlooks have nothing to do with individualism and the thought that a man is his own emperor/master. "Pyramids, the grand canal, the Angkor Wat, the forbidden city, the great wall." Have NOTHING to do with the idea that a man is his own master. China today is doing what many consider to be great things. They are doing it by coercion, and accomplishing their feats by the misery of the individual man. The Hoover dam was built by free men that were paid well in exchange their labor, brains, and talent to produce the masterpiece. At any time, any of them could have said "fuck it, I'm out"

In many ways, I'm discounting the East. Great feats without liberty are the thing of despots. Great feats of collaborating free men are a thing of wonder.

1
DL535 1 point ago +1 / -0

Your first two examples only show that IQ is insufficient for development, not that it is insignificant.

Re: Africa, I agree that lack of navigable rivers was problematic, but the development experience of Africa vs. Asia shows that the IQ issue is real. Most people don't know this, but the big 60s development schemes that failed in Africa, SUCCEEDED in Asia. The main reason is the local population is smart enough to understand and maintain them.

2
justinkayz 2 points ago +2 / -0

The IQ of the Asians in Northern regions such as China, Korea & Japan have statistically higher IQ's than the Asians of the Southern regions. This is not a slam against those Asians, my wife is Thai, but that is the fact when it comes to Asian IQ.
