Lots of mistakes made, including overseas manufacturing and horrible city management. But the US car manufacturers also chose a flawed business model based on advertising vs engineering. Sad. US could have had the best engineered vehicles in the world, but they let Germany and Japan do it.

Sauce: we had a Jeep Cherokee and wanted to buy a new one, was still US made; but the reliability was awful. The steering was loosey goosey. Had to buy a much cheaper used BMW SUV instead. Tight responsive steering and handling, excellent reliability, drove it to about 300K miles then got another used one.
