A great candidate can win with a shit campaign, but the ideal situation (obviously) is a great candidate with a great campaign. See Ronald Reagan in 1984 for an example of that. Trump's 2016 general election campaign was run horrendously. The fuck ups were 100% the fault of Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway, both of whom have absolutely no idea how to do basic ground-level politics.
Trump had no ground game whatsoever in the 2016 general election and it almost killed him. His extreme personal talents won him the election anyway, and he was helped by the fact that half of America has hated Hillary Clinton for almost thirty years. The reason Trump had no ground game is that dipshits Bannon and Conway are lazy and focused entirely too much on earned media.
Trump will not win in 2020 if he doesn't have a solid ground game. Brad Parscale has sadly fucked that up too--and frankly, he knows nothing about politics. He's the Robby Mook of the GOP. If Trump doesn't clean house and hire some real ground-game pros, Biden is going to win. Getting rid of Parscale would be the best move, but Conway also needs to go, as does Jared Kushner.
