Traditional pistols are not really that good for fighting. Police carry them as a badge of authority as much as anything. When the shit goes down they break out the long guns in their car if they can.
Before the Rona and the Riot Red Terrors, it was salad days for the acquisition of that sort of hardware. Braced AR-15 pistols, Mossberg Shockwave, Glock with Flux Brace or Pistol caliber carbines are a few to look at.
My state is Constitutional Carry so anything goes here. In most states it is legal to carry a pistol in your Car. An AR with an arm brace under 26" in overall length is a pistol.
Get one, bolt a safe in your trunk or rear hatch, and move in from the safe to the cabin as you need it during the day and take in the house at night. A gun in your trunk is useless. A gun in your vehicle without a safe is easily stolen.
A lot of heat can fit in a small bag in a small safe.
