I've come to think of the conservatives and the liberals like this:

The former is a community roughly half of the population that have normal, happy, prosperous lives with families, careers etc.,

where the latter is equivalent to a huge insane asylum where the patients overpowered and killed the staff and now control everything that goes on in the hospital.
